A Special Girl

Eight months pregnant but the doctors said "it's safe to fly",
What happened next still makes me cry.

I got off the plane and one day later
I realized I was having pre-term labor.

They kept us in the hospital 8 days,
We need the baby to wait so it will be okay.

We'll send you home but you must rest,
How long you can delay giving birth will be the test.

10 days later there was no stopping you,
The time had come, we all knew.

A little girl to dress in ribbons and lace,
You looked into our eyes, my what a beautiful face.

The nurse said "she's too small we have to take her away",
We'll get back to you later today.

Your Dad and I held each other after all we had been through,
but we didn't know yet what the doctors knew.

The doctors think she has Down Syndrome,
the reason this happens isn't known.

This is supposed to be a happy day,
but the news we received took that away.

We thought they must be wrong, they made a mistake,
it's a common thing that people make.

Later we found out the news was true,
Oh God, now what do we do?

Give it time and you will see,
what a wonderful baby she will be.

What to expect we weren't sure,
we found out she was a little girl so eager to learn.

A beautiful smile and a heart of gold,
these were the things we weren't told.

She loves to read books and dance and play,
and she gives us hugs and kisses every day.

She really is a special girl,
she has so much to offer us in this world.

I look back now and wonder why were we sad,
Why did we think that Down Syndrome was bad???
